Blue Frog Hefe Weizen

Look: Very cloudy and thick burnt orange color. So thick, you cant see through it when held up to light.

Taste: Sweet with a strong clove taste. Alas, it washes way all to quick with little to no after taste.

Conclusion: When I saw this beer on the shelf, with the big frog on the label, I had to pick it up. Those crafty brewers at Blue Frog did this bottle right as well. The frog is right side up, but the wording, and everything else is upside-down. This is done to get you to flip the bottle to mix up the unfiltered goodies in the bottle.

Here is the thing, every time I drink a hefe, I always expect a nice thick, some what bitter beer with a hearty feel. 9 out of 10 times, I am disappointed. This is one of those disappointing times.

There is a strong clove flavor throughout, and a semi-sweet citrus sweetness, but its not overly sweet. It was very refreshing, and would go well with a BBQ. As readers of the blog know, we are not big fans of “fruiting the beer”, but I thought this beer needed something to kick up the taste. I quartered a lemon, squeezed in a slice, then dropped it in my pint. Low and behold, it made a world of a difference. The lemon cut through a lot of the clove and sweet flavor.

I give Blue Frog hefe a 7 out of 10

Michelob, Bavarian Style Wheat

Look: Hazy yellow with white foam head

Taste: Skunky smell and tasted to match with a moldy wheat flavor

Conclusion: Wowee, this one was godawful! Every time I think I've tested the best or worst beer there's always another that will surprise me. This one did, but in a bad way.

It's almost a sour, rotten, but still bitter, flavor that made my face contort in disgust. Seriously, I couldn't help it. I honestly can't fathom who, in their right mind, would drink such a nasty tasting beer as this. It really does disgust me the way major breweries dub these types of beer as the "finest" or with other adjectives that couldn't be further from the truth. This one stunk like smelly feet, literally.

1 Brew(it doesn't deserve an exclamation point)

Hofbrauhaus – Hefeweizen

Look: light orange, cloudy with little to no head

Taste: I tried the beer with no lemon first and it had a strong citrus flavor with strong hints of orange/ tangerine. I then squeezed a wedge of lemon juice into it and dropped the wedge in the glass. The lemon cut the orange citrus flavor and made the beer that much more enjoyable.

Conclusion: On a hot summer day, I can see myself put a few of these babies away. I’m not one to fruit the beer, but the lemon did wonders for this beer. Every drink was like a cool summer breeze blowing through your mouth and over your tongue. Ah, to be lying in a hammock on the beech with a cold bottle of this hef. paradise in deed.
It should also be noted that this beer is brewed the to the specifications of the German Beer Purity Laws.

I give this beer a cooool 7 brews out of 10

Oggi's - Sweet Spot Hefe

Look: Orangish-yellow, like watered-down orange juice with almost no head

Taste: Sweet initially with a hint of cloves. Mix of fruity and spiced flavors

Conclusion: Do I like trying new beers? Yes, but occasionally I run across a waste of space like this one. The mouthfeel was akin to a Hefeweizen but the flavor....BLEHH!!! My buddy and I couldn't figure out what the hell it was that tasted so bad until we checked the description of it. Apparently they brew this sick little puppy with cloves and bananas?!?!

Okay, I'm all for experimenting and creating new and exotic beers but if you brew something wouldn't you taste it before serving it to the innocent masses? I guess not. Simply put, this one was triggering my gag reflex. I couldn't even finish the small tester. Puke-orama!

Great White Wheat – Rock Bottom (LBC)

Look – Hazy golden color, small white head – lemon wedge on rim

Taste – Very refreshing citrus flavor that is not overwhelmingly acidic. A little sweetness before the slight bitter bite hits ya.

Conclusion – This is a good beer I enjoy from time to time. Unlike many hefeweizen beers, this one tastes good with or with out the lemon juice squeezed into it. Its flavor is not over powering and leaves a very good after taste on the tongue.

A 6 out of 10
