Butte Brewing Co., MateVeza
Look: Cloudy yellow with stark white foam head
Taste: Initially tastes of malt and barley with a lemony and citrus tea flavor
Conclusion: This is a unique ale that is brewed with malts, hops, and yerba mate which is derived from the dried leaves and stems of the yerba mate tree(prounounced Mah-tay). Yerba Mate is a caffeinated beverage much like coffee that is used throughout South America. Yerba Mate + cerveza = MateVeza.
The drink begins initially with a flavor that is much like a hefeweizen. Easy and soft but lemon in flavor. Towards the middle and end of the drink you can taste the distinct and strong hints of the yerba mate. Butte Brewing claims that one of these 22oz bottles has the caffeine equal to one cup of joe. A morning pick-me-up? That's up to you. This is a distinct and interesting brew that I rather enjoyed despite it's unusual ingredients. Also this brew is approved by the vegan society for us vegans out there. Good to know!
