Oggi’s Pizza and Brewery (Sports Bar)

This brewery was brought to our attention by a friend of ours that contributed some art work to the site. He’d never been there, but had heard of the place; well, we took it upon ourselves to seek it out and review the brewery for what it was.
Oggi’s is located in a shopping center/ strip mall in Orange County. It is a rather small establishment with nothing to really distinguish it from the rest of the restaurants and shops, save for a holding tank on the outside of the building. As you walk in, you immediately get the sports bar vibe. As you turn to face the bar, you will find an ungodly number of flat screens TV’s encircling the dining and bar area. We counted twenty seven TVs in all – most impressive. They had every sports channel to satisfy all comers: F-1 racing on Speed Channel, soccer on FSC, and Goal TV, Tennis on USA, and so on. The walls were also decorated with all manner of sports memorabilia, from jerseys to pictures, to plaques and bats and balls. They even had a seven foot all Trojan near the bar. Although not a USC fan, it was a nice touch that added a focal piece to the bar.
We sat at a booth, and ordered the beer sampler right away. That was the main reason we were there to begin with, and were pleasantly surprised. They brought us seven different beers ranging from blond to pitch black stout. Since we were going to be a while reviewing the beers and going for seconds, we ordered a pizza to see what they were all about. You can tell they were a locals oriented bar by the names of some of their pizzas; one was named after a TV announcer, another named after an AM Radio Sports show.
The service was good and pretty fast and the pizza pretty good. I personally am not a big fan of thick crust pizzas, but the crust sure did help absorb some of the alcohol from the beers we tasted. Naturally, I requested some Ranch dressing to dip my crust in, and my, what a treat! Nice thick, creamy Ranch with a strong taste of dill. I dipped my next slice of pizza into the Ranch, but it killed the flavor of the pizza. I wouldn’t recommend dipping your pizza slice into the Ranch, let alone drizzling some on top of your slice because it will over power anything it touches. It is great for dipping your crust in however. They also have some thick napkins, which means they know what they are serving at the place: hot wings, pizza, and other bar fare. Glad they know what their bread and butter is and what the consumers need to clean up with. (high marks for detail)
All in all, it is a small brewery with a good sports atmosphere, but not much of a brewery atmosphere. The food was good, the napkins were a shirt saver, and the beer was okay, save for one AMAZING brew that caught us off guard, the McGarvey’s Scottish Ale… Oh man, what a brew! Believe me when I say that, that one beer alone is worth a trip to Oggi’s.

I give this brewery a 7 out of 10
